Oswego Boxing Club traveled to Lockport, NY on Saturday, June 3rd to support an amateur boxing event hosted by world champion kickboxer, Joe Taylor. OBC had two boxers on the card.
Bout number one of the event featured OBC’s own, Jorge Delgado Jr. Delgado is 26 years old and made his third appearance in the ring, improving his record to 2-1. Delgado started the bout confident and patient, a characteristic of a seasoned competitor. Delgado landed a series of three and four punch combinations and dictated the pace of the fight. Delgado’s trainer, Derrick Falcetti, stated “Delgado gave his opponent a standing 8 count in the second round. The judges scored the bout unanimously for Delgado, securing victory number 2. Delgado exceeded my expectations in his third bout.” Falcetti also stated “Delgado is a hard worker and most importantly, he’s coachable. A competitive boxer that listens will go a long way in boxing and also in life.”
Delgado isn’t just a competitive boxer. He has joined the coaching staff at OBC and assists with the youth boxing program alongside Falcetti, Andre Mendez and Dominic Falcetti. “Boxing has given me purpose. My life has done a complete 180. If I can help one kid from going down the path that I chose, that would be the biggest win of my career,” Delgado stated. Falcetti said, “the best part of our gym is that it isn’t just about boxing. This is about life and inspiring people to be the best they can be.”
The second competitor for OBC was 16 year old Luis Colon Molina. Molina is a native of Puerto Rico and moved to Oswego at the age of 11.
Molina started off the bout taking control immediately. Molina’s Coach, Roberto Valentin stated, “the plan was to establish dominance early using head movement and landing body shots.” Molina did just that. The team has focused on making their opponents miss and in return, creating an opportunity to counter their opponent’s attack. Molina continued to dominate throughout the bout and ended up winning by referee stoppage.
This isn’t the first time Oswego Boxing Club has competed this year. In March, Andre Mendez returned to the ring after a short layoff to compete in the NYS Golden Gloves Tournament. Mendez fought in the state finals against a tough opponent from Rochester. Mendez performed well but lost by split decision. Coach Falcetti stated “we can’t be mad over this one. We are proud of Andre’s return to the ring and for the bout to go to a split decision, that is a win in itself.” Mendez is no stranger to competition. At only 17 years old, he has competed nearly 30 times and fought at a national level
twice. Mendez plans to compete ten to twelve more times and is contemplating his journey as a professional.
Both Delgado and Molina credit their coaches, the members of OBC and their families for supporting their journey. Both competitors plan to return to the ring on June 17th in Rochester, NY.
Earlier this year in May, Delgado fought alongside his teammate, Anthony Davis, in Albany, NY. Both fighters secured wins performing extremely well.
Delgado fought a tough opponent but was able to land the better punches, winning by unanimous decision. The fight served as a learning platform for Delgado. Falcetti stated "he was excited that he got the win, but you could see it in his eyes. He was thinking about how he could improve and was mentally preparing for his next bout."
Davis, an 18 year old southpaw, made his debut in amateur boxing and put on a show. Davis' footwork was outstanding. He created angles and leveraged his southpaw style to win the fight by referee stoppage in the third round. Davis dedicated this fight to his brother-in-law, Sidney LeCeur, a former OBC competitor that Falcetti credits with "putting OBC on the map." Falcetti said "Sidney was just different. He had a champion mindset and put everything he had into boxing. We are still devastated by his passing 6 years ago. His pictures will remain on our walls, and we will cherish the memories forever."
